Joshua wrote just enough to create the story, but left much unsaid, allowing your mind to fill in the unspoken details. This allowed readers to feel more engaged with the story, as they are given the opportunity to use their imagination to fill in the details: colors, genders, era of time, looks and personality of the people, etc.

He constructed the parameters for your imagination, then let it run wild.

And the image he used to introduce the story served as your visual anchor, whether you knew it or not.

This visual anchor provided a point of reference for your thoughts and imagination. Without a visual anchor, your thoughts would be untethered and directionless. The anchor helped to give shape and definition to your thoughts, and allowed you to better understand and visualize the story.

The colors, genre, and cartoon-style of the image influenced how you visualized the story.

You might have visualized Dilbert-esque shapes, colors, and dialogue as you read based on the Dilbert-theme of the image.
